Microsoft is set to launch a significant security enhancement for Outlook users across multiple platforms. Starting April 2025, the company will roll out a new two-click verification feature for encrypted emails, requiring users to confirm their intent to access sensitive content explicitly.
This update aims to reduce accidental exposure of confidential information, particularly in public environments or during screen-sharing sessions.
Microsoft has announced a phased rollout schedule for this security enhancement. For general Outlook users worldwide, the feature will begin appearing in early April 2025, with complete deployment expected by late April.
Government Community Cloud (GCC) users will see the feature beginning in early May 2025, with full implementation by the end of that month. Mobile platform users on both Android and iOS will receive the update starting mid-June 2025, with completion anticipated by late June.
This security measure is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 483883 and represents a significant step forward in Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to strengthen data protection for its enterprise customers.
Microsoft Outlook’s New Two-Click Feature
The new security protocol introduces an additional verification step when accessing encrypted emails. When users receive an encrypted message, they will first see a notification stating, “Your organization mandates clicking ‘View Message’ to access the email content”. Only after clicking this button will the encrypted content be rendered and displayed.
This deliberate two-step process ensures that sensitive information isn’t automatically displayed, reducing the risk of confidential data being inadvertently exposed when devices are used in public spaces or during screen-sharing sessions.
The feature works consistently across Outlook for Windows desktop, Outlook web interface, and Outlook mobile applications for iOS and Android.
Microsoft has designed this feature with administrative flexibility in mind. By default, the two-click verification will be disabled, allowing organizations to make implementation decisions based on their specific security requirements. IT administrators can enable the feature through either the Microsoft Azure portal or PowerShell commands.
