Taiwanese electronics manufacturing major Foxconn is reportedly planning to make iPhone enclosures in India and is eyeing at establishing a new unit in Tamil Nadu.
An ET report, citing sources close to the matter, said that the company is looking at building the new facility within the ESR Industrial Park at Oragadam in Tamil Nadu.
“Foxconn plans to start making enclosures in Tamil Nadu as they deepen their footprint in the country. Construction has begun for their enclosures unit at the industrial park. This will be a separate unit close to their upcoming display module assembly plant which is in advanced stages in the same industrial park,” a source told the publication.
Inc42 has reached out to Foxconn for comments on the development. The story will be updated based on the response.
This comes on the back of its emerging rival Tata Electronics planning to increase iPhone enclosure production at its Hosur facility in Tamil Nadu, aiming to reach 100,000 units.
Meanwhile, Foxconn plans to expand its iPhone manufacturing in the country, aiming to produce 25-30 Mn iPhones from its India units this year, marking more than twice the capacity it manufactured in the past year.
Further, the company is rapidly expanding its manufacturing capacity across the country in multiple locations. For instance, Foxconn acquired a 300-acre plot near Bengaluru airport in 2023, with an allocation of INR 25,000 Cr towards the establishment of the project.
Additionally, the Taiwanese electronics maker was also in talks with the Tamil Nadu government to set up a 200 acres manufacturing unit in November last year, to expand its battery manufacturing business in India.
Meanwhile, the Union cabinet has given its approval to a joint venture (JV) between HCL and Foxconn to set up a semiconductor unit under the India Semiconductor Mission, where both entities will cumulatively invest INR 3,700 Cr, to set up the facility in Noida.
