The Karnataka government is reportedly planning to launch a dedicated AI Mission in tandem with the Centre-led IndiaAI Mission.
An ET report, citing Karnataka’s minister of electronics, information technology and biotechnology Priyank Kharge, said that with the adoption of GenAI in masses, there is a need to regulate the use of AI and build a framework.
Kharge added that currently the state is contemplating on including the new policy as part of the upcoming Karnataka IT policy 2025-30 to develop a separate framework for AI. The state plans to unveil its new IT policy in November during the Bengaluru Tech Summit.
Karnataka is home to more than 1 Mn techies and 1 Lakh AI professionals. The discussions around the AI framework policy comes close on the heels of the state launching its AI Workforce Impact Study to understand how AI automation is impacting the workforce and the future skills people need to focus on.
On the other hand Karnataka has one of the most matured startup ecosystems in the country as Bengaluru-based AI startups snapped up $872 Mn in funding in the last five years as per India’s AI Uprising: GenAI, AI Agents & The Future Of Startups, Report 2025 by Inc42. Besides, the state of Karnataka also announced a corpus of INR 100 Cr for deeptech startups in this year’s budget with plans to set up a Centre for Applied AI for Tech Solutions (CATS) with an investment of INR 50 Cr over the next five years.
Overall Bengaluru emerged as the most funded startup hub with over $2 Bn of investments.
While Karnataka is planning to develop its own AI mission, the Centre is already on course to push the development of domestic AI models in the country under its IndiaAI mission which has an outlay of more than INR 10K Cr. GenAI startups like SarvamAI, Gnani.ai and Soket AI have already been shortlisted under the Centre-led scheme to build India’s domestic LLMs. This would further give a thrust to India’s GenAI market which is expected to become a $17 Bn opportunity by 2030.
