The digital spending on gaming through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) saw its highest transaction value of 2025 in October, according to data released by NPCI. This comes despite the ban on real-money gaming platforms in August, after which gaming-related UPI transactions had recorded back-to-back declines.

According to the data, spending under the “Digital Goods (Games)” category touched 464.1 million transactions worth Rs 12,641.49 crore in October. This is the highest value since July 2024, when the category logged 363 million transactions amounting to Rs 13,693.28 crore.

For context, digital spending on games had fallen sharply in August. The category reported 271 million transactions worth Rs 7,441 crore, down from 351 million transactions worth Rs 10,076 crore in July.

Notably, “gaming” did not appear in NPCI’s list of its top 30 digital spending categories and may have been grouped under other classifications in the dataset.

In October, groceries and supermarkets topped UPI spending with 1,880 million transactions worth Rs 46,115 crore, followed by fast-food outlets and restaurants. Telecom services registered 659 million transactions valued at Rs 15,116 crore. Notably, Digital Goods: Games recorded 464 million transactions worth Rs 12,641 crore, making it one of the highest-value categories.

Another key category, digital gold, recorded 20.92 million transactions worth Rs 550.12 crore in October. This marks a sharp decline of 80% in volume and nearly 61% in value from 103 million transactions worth Rs 1,410.18 crore in September. The decline may be linked to SEBI’s advisory warning investors against buying digital gold from unregulated platforms, saying that such products do not fall under its regulatory oversight.
